If there's a simile that I could get out of Ateneo's performance in this year's UAAP, it's "Ateneo is like diesel." Diesel is a kind of oil that is hard to heat up to produce mechanical energy and it takes a lot of time for it to do so but once it gets hot it produces energy that is even more than what is expected out of it. It is very like what the Ateneo De Manila has been doing in this year's UAAP Season 73. They were at the 5th spot of the team standings in the first round of eliminations but they slowly moved up to the 3rd spot in the second round and eventually unseating the rejuvenated Adamson Falcons in the 2nd spot, gaining the most coveted twice to beat advantage. Their performance is indeed diesel-like. From then on they have gained momentum which I believe is enough for them to get their third championship.
In the UAAP Finals the Ateneo Blue Eagles took Game 1 of the UAAP Finals over the lead leading FEU Tamaraws with the score of 72-49. It was a lopsided game wherein the Ateneo Blue Eagles blew out the Tamaraws out of their tracks early in the first half. Ateneo managed to generate a huge 21 point-lead. They used their speed in getting make fast breaks, strong defense, and well executed box 4 play. It was Emman Monfort's pointguarding skills that helped Ateneo's fruitful game 1 offense.
Ateneo had a great shooting as they got a 49% shooting in the first half while the truggling FEU only had 22%. The Ateneo Blue Eagles had 15 fast break points.
