DLSU Green Archers Defeated Ateneo In FilOil Flying V Hanes Cup 2012: La Salle Barges Into The QuarterFinals

    "Another Classic Game"

    By: Kristina Caramel Sy

The De La Salle Green Archers snatched the 3rd spot of the Team Standings from the UST Growling Tigers as they beat the Ateneo De Manila Blue Eagles in the final match of the eliminations of the 2012 FilOil Flying V Pre-season Hanes Cup. The final score was 62-59 with DLSU prevailing in Over Time.

Both teams' respective line-ups coming into this game were incomplete. The Green Archers played without Mark Jayven Tallo and Luigi Dela Paz. Tallo didn't play due to a one game suspension after having an altercation with Mapua's Andretti Stevens. Dela Paz on the other hand is still nursing an injury. ADMU meanwhile played minus Greg Slaughter who has a left ankle sprain.

The two teams were incomplete but nonetheless, this was still an epic match. The Ateneo-La Salle game is really something different.

In the earlier parts of the match both teams were trying to answer each other's baskets. They were trying to outrun each other but it seems that they were evenly matched that none of the teams really had a big double digit lead over the other.

But, a booming three pointer came from the rookie phenom, and now part of the Starting 5, Jeron Teng (Younger brother of UST's Jeric Teng), that energized La Salle to finally establish a much needed 11 point lead, 31-20, in the latter part of the first quarter. Through that lead, DLSU seemed to be invincible as they have an enough cushion to stave off Ateneo. They seemed to have found their groove and the motivation to go all the way and win this ball game.

From the second quarter up to the last 3 minutes of the 4th quarter DLSU was able to maintain their lead over Ateneo.

But La Salle can't seem to count Ateneo out of the game as the Blue Eagles made a big run headed by the former MVP, Ryan Buenafe. He showed his veteran moves to the basket that trimmed down their deficit and enable them to snatch the lead from La Salle in the last 1:47 tick of the 4th quarter clock.

The game almost ended with a score of 53-50 for ADMU, but the Rookie Phenom of DLSU, Mr. Jeron Teng (who for me plays like JoJo Lastimosa), successfully sank his 3-point attempt that forced the game to go to an Overtime.

In the Overtime, L.A Revilla made a three pointer for La Salle. For me, that was a big shot as it baffled the Blue Eagles. Ateneo can't seem to find the basket. They struggled to score in the Overtime due primarily to the ominous pressure that La Salle applied to them.

In the last seconds of the Overtime, Ateneo resorted to foul the Taft Boys. Jeron Teng's charities in the last 9.9 seconds of Overtime shut the gate for Ateneo. As a result, La Salle won the game and they are now in the Quarterfinals of FilOil Flying V Hanes Cup 2012.

Coach Gee Abanilla of La Salle has no room to celebrate as they will have to prepare for another physical match against the Golden Stags in quarterfinals.

    Quarterfinals Pairing:

    SBC vs. CSB
    UST vs. NU
    FEU vs. ADMU
    DLSU vs. SSC-R

Notable scorers in this game for both sides:

DLSU's Rookie Phenom Jeron Teng with 17 points and Ateneo's Ryan Buenafe who garnered 21 points and 4 rebounds.
