Ateneo Beat UST In UAAP Season 75 Finals Game 1

Earlier today the Ateneo Blue Eagles took Game 1 of the UAAP Season 75 Men's Basketball Finals after they beat the UST Growling Tigers via 83-78. They are one win away from achieving that very rare 5 straight Championships in the UAAP. A feat that was done by only 2 teams in UAAP History, UST and UE.

A little UAAP History courtesy of my Atenean Brother:

UE technically has the most number of consecutive men's senior basketball titles with 7. BUT in 67-'68 (their 3rd), Game 1 of the Championship was declared as a no contest prior to the third quarter as both coaches refused to issue to the officials their respective starting lineups during the start of the 2nd half. (Yes, MAGULO ang kwento.) The UAAP Board later ruled the championship series as a TIE and declared UE and UST as co-champions. #WIKI; So with a SHARED championship itong streak na ito ng UE. If Ateneo wins this season's championship, Ateneo de Manila University will have the longest streak with no shared titles at 5.

Nico Salva was the hero in game 1. He scored 30 big points that cemented his name in the UAAP Finals History. He is one of the 3 Blue Eagles who scored 30 or more points in a UAAP Finals. The other 2 players are LA Tenorio and Rabeh Al-Hussaini.

The Blue Eagles had a great scoring run in the 3rd quarter to overcome the the lead of UST. From then on Ateneo never looked back. UST had a little run in the last 2 minutes of the 4th Quarter, but Kiefer Ravena acted like a firefighter. He knocked down a very difficult buzzer beating jumper in the last 10 seconds of the ballgame that sealed the deal for Ateneo.

The Blue Eagles now lead the best of 3 Finals series, 1-0. Game 2 will be on October 11, 2012 Thursday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Scores courtesy of UAAP 75 FB Page:

    UST Tigers: 78 - Teng 25, Mariano 22, Ferrer 13, Abdul 9, Fortuna 4, Lo 3, Pe 2, Bautista 0
