    By Kristina Caramel Sy

The San Sebastian Golden Stags rose from their painful loss against the Mapua Cardinals as they vanquished the top team San Beda Red Lions, 80-71 last Monday, August 13, for their first round match-up in the NCAA Season 88 held at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

This game was supposed to be played last Thursday but it was postponed due to the inclement weather caused by the Monsoon Rains.

The Stags showed their dominance as the game started. They buried the Red Lions by a double-digit deficit, 32-15 in the first few minutes of the First Half.

Ronald Pascual steered his team to this big win as he garnered 21 points. He knocked down 7/13 3-point shots that prevented the Red Lions from making a run.

Another Golden Stag, Calvin "The Beast" Abueva, aided his co-kapampangan via his double-double 21 points and 21 rebounds plus 9 assists. He took some crucial baskets while the Red Lions were knocking on their doors at the 3rd period. The 3rd Quarter ended with only 1 point separating the two teams, 58-59.

Anjo Caram, who spearheaded the Red Lions with 17 points and Baser Amer, with 14 points, tried to bounce back in the 2nd half. Jake Pascual also pitched in some points that trimmed down their 20 point deficit down to a precarious one point. But the Stags did not let the Red Lions steal the lead as Ronald Pascual and Calvin Abueva made some three point conversions that staved off the Red Lions and eventually establish another double-digit lead. Lyle Antipuesto's own conversion at the 3-point line in the last 4:24 secured the victory for the Stags. They eventually grabbed the top seed of the team standings with 7 wins and 2 losses.
