While admitting that he is a boxing fan particularly of Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre cautioned the latter that boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) are like apples and oranges.
St. Pierre is commenting on reports that Pacquiao is eyeing to compete in MMA, “I love Manny Pacquiao, I’m also confident that nobody in mixed martial arts will try boxing and face him [Pacquiao],” St. Pierre told reporters during Thursday’s press conference held at the ELJCC building in ABS CBN compound. The 29-year old MMA fighter better known as “GSP” is in the country for a brief visit.

“He can try mixed martial arts but I can’t say anything if he can be successful. But when some mixed martial artist tries boxing, I’m sure they’ll get knocked out if they challenge Pac-quiao,” he added.

St. Pierre explained that boxing and MMA are complicated combat sports and undivided attention is needed to master and become a champion in each disciplines.

When asked to comment on the controversial Pacquiao-Mayweather rivalry, St. Pierre said, “Mayweather is good technical boxer but he won’t win against Pacquiao.”

St. Pierre is also thankful to Freddie Roach, Pacquaio’s trainer for providing him excellent boxing training, “I’m also looking forward to train under Freddie here in the Philippines and with Pacquiao,” he said.

St. Pierre, who holds a record of 20 wins, eight by knockouts, five by submission and seven by decisions with two losses, is scheduled to fight American Josh Koscheck in UFC 124 in December. The Canadian MMA champion is also keen on fighting another UFC legend, Anderson Silva in the future, if he succeeded in increasing his weight from 170 to 215 pounds.
